The FAA-Designated New York UAS Test Site (NYUASTS) is one of seven FAA-Designated UAS Test Sites in the United States. Owned by Oneida County and managed by AX Enterprize, the NYUASTS consists of a highly instrumented unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) test environments at Griffiss International Airport(KRME) in Rome, NY and is part of New York’s 50-mile Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) UAS corridor spanning from Rome to Syracuse.
The NYUASTS adjacent to the Air Force Research Laboratory Information Directorate (AFRL/RI) and is the only test site based at a towered airport with Class D Airspace and access to Class A, C, E, and G airspace above varied terrain, urban/rural, inland lakes, coastal and maritime areas. Multiple UAS flight areas at and around KRME enables numerous UAS, large and small, operations to be executed simultaneously with manned operations.
The test site’s diverse research and development portfolio includes UAS Traffic Management (UTM), Advanced Air Mobility (AAM), Counter-UAS, Trustworthy Remote ID, Detect And Avoid, Vehicle to Vehicle technology challenges and needs being addressed by our federal, state, local, tribal, commercial and academic collaborators.
SkyDome, adjacent to the NYUASTS Ops Center, is 150’x150x50’ indoor/outdoor instrumented UAS, Internet of Things (IoT) and Cyber Physical System (CPS) experimentation facility that will support year-round development and test of advanced technologies including Radio Frequency spectrum for command and control, counter UAS, detect and avoid, vehicle to vehicle to communications, mobile networking, and autonomous swarms.
The NYUASTS is working with the FAA and their many partners to develop dual-use UAS and AAM corridors that will support both the test and operational needs of organizations from across the globe.
